Cam Seamus is an American author who grew up in the beachside town of Dana Point, California. He spent most of his youth in, on, and around the water. By age 12 he was looking for odd jobs on sailboats; he'd polish them - rubbing out oxidation by hand and working as a "mast monkey" and being hoisted up the mast to do small repairs.
"I've always loved boats - I feel at home around them," said Seamus.
Cam often wonders if that love was passed down from the generations of fishermen that he descended from in Ireland.
Cam said, "Throughout my life, I felt as if there was a story inside of me that wanted to come out. But I didn't understand it because I hadn't yet lived long enough, seen enough, or suffered enough. I was fifty-five when I hung up my corporate hat for a few years to work on the water. After two years of finally figuring myself out, I wanted to write, and write, and write. That journey is chronicled in my memoir, Two Years Behind the Helm. I also feel that I wasn't honest enough with myself until I finished that journey. I think that self-honesty comes through in fiction - it's the authenticity that brings the characters to life. That's just one guy's point of view..."
Cam has published three books: Two Years Behind the Helm - his memoir of self-discovery, and his fictional series about Jack Kelly titled The Captain- Point Loma and The Captain - Colombian Waters. He is currently working on the third book in the series which is planned for five books.
Cam holds a Master Near Coastal Captain's License and is an American Sailing Association (ASA) Instructor. He learned how to sail in 1984 while serving in the Marine Corps through a U.S. Navy recreational sailing program. He was instantly hooked. In his early fifties, he began taking ASA courses, which led to him becoming an instructor and captain.
Captain Cam, as his friends call him, has sailed boats ranging from 12' - 84' and up to 63 tons. He has sailed in bodies of water all over the world, including Puget Sound, San Francisco Bay, Sacramento Delta, Coastal Southern CA, Coastal Massachusetts, Coastal Maine, Coastal Florida, Bahamas, Caribbean (BVI), Ionian Sea (Greece), Tyrrhenian Sea (Italy), Great Lakes (Michigan, Huron, Erie), Northern Pacific Ocean, Southern Pacific Ocean. His longest passage was from Panama to Hiva Oa in the French Marquesas Islands on a Moody 44' sailboat - 33 days covering approximately 4,100 nautical miles.
His last work as a captain, was for Sail San Diego as a charter captain. During that time, Cam also taught classes, completed insurance certifications for boat owners, delivered boats, and worked as a captain for sea trials.
